Sanlucar de Barrameda, not far from Jerez de la Frontera, is home to the famous aperitif wine, situated at the mouth of the Guadalquivir river, near the marches of the Donana National Park. Sanlucar is home to the type of Sherry, Manzanilla, and is famed equally for its excellent seafood and its wonderful facilities as well as its great location in the Cadiz region of Spain on the Costa de la Luz.
Sanlucar has some fantastic beaches, which stretch several miles, with numerous great restaurants and chiringuitos along the side of the golden beach. The Plaza del Cabildo is a beautiful, andalucian square with bars and restaurants, not far from the local market in Plaza de San Roque.
Interestingly, Sanlucar is also famous for horse racing, dating back even to 1845, which is held along a 1,800 meter section of beach, near the Rio Guadalquivir in August, which is a thrilling event with crowds of spectators and real racehorses. There are spectator stands, paddocks, bookies and enclosures, this is now an international event with countries taking part.
