Punta Umbria is the closest beach to Huelva City, the popular coastal city in the Costa de la Luz, which is often said to be one of the most popular resorts in the region. Sitting on the bank of the Río Odiel river, surrounded by salt marshes, Punta Umbria features some of the most beautiful surroundings in Spain, like the Parque Nacional Coto Donaña.
Historically, the British were the first holidaymakers to visit the area, with the Rio Tinto Mining Company in the 19th century, but in the 1920's spanish people also begun to holiday here, with the establishment of a ferry from Huelva.
Punta Umbria has some fantastic beaches running the length of the punta (the point), with beaches like the Playa La Mata Negra, with all the restaurants, bars and chiringuitos aswell as the sporting facilities and all manner of beach facilities, even hammocks for hire! Here there are some brilliant windsurfing, sailing and boat trips to go on at a very reasonable price.
One of the most popular points of Punta Umbria is the sunset over the port, which must be seen to be believed. Nearby is the Calle Ancha, a busy shopping area where there are bars, restaurants and great local seafood. For the more lively people there are numerous busy late-night bars and clubs, especially in the summer.
Punta Umbria has an amasing three protected areas around it, which have been declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO., which is recognised by the distinctive wetland flora and fauna.
